History of Kumaun फिर बाद में कूर्माचल का कुमु और कुमु का कुमाऊं हो गया। किसी जमाने में यह नाम चम्पावत और उसके आसपास के गावों को दिया जाता था। उसके बाद यह काली नदी के किनारे के सारे क्षेत्रों को दिया जाने लगा।बाद में जब चंद राजाओं के राज्य का विस्तार हुआ तो उस समय के अल्मोड़ा और नैनीताल के सारे क्षेत्र का नाम भी कुमाऊं हो गया। अंग्रेजी राज्य में कभी देहरादून भी कुमाऊँ राज्य का हिस्सा हुआ करता था। चंद राजाओं ने इस नाम को प्रसिद्ध किया।
