History of Kumaun कुमाऊं उत्तरांचल, भारत के प्रशासनिक प्रभागों में से एक है । इसमें अल्मोड़ा, बागेश्वर, चंपावत, नैनीताल, पिथौरागढ़ और उधमसिंह नगर जिले शामिल हैं । यह उत्तर में तिब्बत , पूर्व में नेपाल, दक्षिण में उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य और पश्चिम में गढ़वाल क्षेत्र से घिरा है। कुमाऊँ के लोगों को कुमाऊँनी के नाम से जाना जाता है । हल्द्वानी, नैनीताल, रुद्रपुर, अल्मोड़ा, पिथौरागढ़, मुक्तेश्वर और रानीखेत कुमाऊं के महत्वपूर्ण शहर हैं । नैनीताल कुमाऊं मंडल का प्रशासनिक केंद्र है।

History of Kumaun कुमाऊँ की पहाड़ियों का मुख्यालय नैनीताल में है । कुमाऊं क्षेत्र ने एक पुरानी राजपूत रियासत का गठन किया, जो 19वीं शताब्दी की शुरुआत में विलुप्त हो गई । कुछ समय के लिए इस क्षेत्र पर गोरखाओं का शासन था । लेकिन कुमाऊं के लोगों ने उनका बहादुरी से मुकाबला किया और अंग्रेजों की मदद से उन्हें बाहर खदेड़ दिया। बाद में, इस क्षेत्र को 1815 में अंग्रेजों द्वारा कब्जा कर लिया गया था, और तीन प्रशासकों श्री ट्रेल, श्री जेएच बैटन और सर हेनरी रामसे द्वारा गैर-विनियमन प्रणाली पर सत्तर वर्षों तक शासन किया गया था ।
History of Kumaun एक मान्यता के अनुसार जब भगवान विष्णु का कूर्म अथवा कछवे का अवतार हुआ तो वह अवतार कहा जाता है कि चम्पावती नदी के पूर्व में कूर्म पर्वत जिसे आजकल कंदादेव या कानदेव कहते हैं वहाँ वह तीन वर्ष तक खड़े रहे। उस कछवे के पैरों के चिन्ह उस पर्वत पर अंकित हो गए और वहां विद्यमान हो गए। तब से उस पर्वत का नाम कूर्माचल हो गया (कूर्म + अचल)
History of Kumaun फिर बाद में कूर्माचल का कुमु और कुमु का कुमाऊं हो गया। किसी जमाने में यह नाम चम्पावत और उसके आसपास के गावों को दिया जाता था। उसके बाद यह काली नदी के किनारे के सारे क्षेत्रों को दिया जाने लगा।बाद में जब चंद राजाओं के राज्य का विस्तार हुआ तो उस समय के अल्मोड़ा और नैनीताल के सारे क्षेत्र का नाम भी कुमाऊं हो गया। अंग्रेजी राज्य में कभी देहरादून भी कुमाऊँ राज्य का हिस्सा हुआ करता था। चंद राजाओं ने इस नाम को प्रसिद्ध किया।
History of Kumaun कुमाऊं के लोग खेती व धन कमाने में माहिर हैं और बड़े कमाऊ हैं इसलिए उन्हें कुमाऊनी कहा जाता है। और यह भी वह बोलते हैं की काली नदी के पास वाले काली कुमाऊँ का नाम यह काली नदी के कारण नहीं बल्कि वहां के राजा कल्लू तड़ागी के नाम पे पड़ा। देवदार और बांझ की घनी काली झाडियां भी काली नदी के आसपास के क्षेत्रों में बहुत पाई जाती है इसलिए भी इसे काली कुमाऊँ कहा जाता था। चंद राजाओं के समय कुमाऊँ के तीन शासन मंडल थे। काली कुमाऊँ , अल्मोड़ा: और तराई भाभर का इलाका , ये उस समय की बात है जब चंद वंश खूब फैला हुआ था।
