Warriors of Uttarakhand उप्पुगढ़ 16वीं सदी के गढ़वाल में 52 गढ़ों में एक माना जाता था।  इतिहासकार बताते हैं कि लगातार हमलों के बाद भी यहां के बाशिंदों ने कभी भी बाहरी लोगों की दासता स्वीकार नहीं की।  इसी उप्पुगढ़ की धरती में पैदा हुए थे एक वीर, जिनका नाम था कफ्फू चौहान।  इस वीर ने अपनी प्रजा की आजादी के लिए राजा अजयपाल की अधीनता कभी स्वीकार नहीं की।

  • गढ़वाल के सोमपाल वंश का 37वां राजा था अजयपाल , बताया जाता है कि अजयपाल ने चांदपुर गढ़ के विस्तार के लिए गढ़वाल के अन्य 52 गढ़ों को जीतने का संकल्प लिया था।  उस वक्त अजयपाल के पास महज 4 गढ़ थे लेकिन, अपनी विशाल सेना के दम पर वह गढ़वाल के बाकी सभी गढ़ों को जीतने के मकसद से निकल पड़ा।  इन 52 गढ़ों में आखिरी गढ़ था उप्पुगढ़ , लेकिन उप्पुगढ़ के राजा कफ्फू चौहान ने अजयपाल के सामने आत्मसमर्पण करने से इंकार दिया।  बताया जाता है कि राजा अजयपाल ने दीपावली के कुछ दिन पहले उप्पुगढ़ पर आक्रमण किया था, उस वक्त उप्पुगढ़ के लोग दिवाली की तैयारी कर रहे थे।

  • Warriors of Uttarakhand जब कफ्फू चौहान अपनी माता और रानी की मौत के बारे में सुने तो गम के चलते वह अपने सिर के बाल काट देते हैं।  ऐसा माना जाता था कि कफ्फू चौहान को वरदान प्राप्त था कि जब तक उसके सिर में बालों की जटा रहेगी, उसे कोई हरा नहीं सकता।  इस बीच युद्ध भूमि में राजा अजयपाल की सेना ने कफ्फू चौहान और उसकी सेना को बंदी बना दिया ,  वीर कफ्फू चौहान को मौत की सजा मिली। 

  • लोग ऐसा भी बताते हैं कि राजा अजयपाल ने अपने सैनिकों को आदेश दिया था कि कफ्फू चौहान की गर्दन इस प्रकार काटी जाए कि धड़ से अलग होने के बाद सिर का हिस्सा उसके पैरो पर गिरे।  लेकिन, इस बीच कफ्फू चौहान ने मुंह में रेत भर दी. सैनिकों ने कफ्फू का सिर कलम किया लेकिन राजा अजयपाल के पैरों में रेत गिरी और सिर का हिस्सा दूसरी ओर।  इस घटना से प्रभावित होकर राजा अजयपाल ने भागीरथी नदी के किनारे कफ्फू चौहान के शव का अंतिम संस्कार किया।

  • Warriors of Uttarakhand राजा अजयपाल के इतिहास पर नजर डालें तो साल 1512 में अजयपाल ने अपनी राजधानी देवलगढ़ में स्थानांतरित की थी।  1517 में ही उसने अपनी राजधानी श्रीनगर बनाई। इसी दौरान राजा अजयपाल ने गढ़वाल के 52 गढ़ों को जीतकर एक बड़े साम्राज्य की स्थापना की थी।  आज उप्पुगढ़ में चौहान जाति के सभी लोग वीर कफ्फू चौहान के वंशज माने जाते हैं।  ऐसा कहा जाता है कि कप्फू का एक गूंगा भाई भी था। जो हमले के वक्त गांव से बाहर गया था , उसी ने चौहान वंश को आगे बढ़ाया।

  • अजयपाल ने राजा कफ्फू चौहान की वीरता के किस्से सुने थे।  इसलिए उसने रात के वक्त भागीरथी नदी के बाएं तरफ रमोगढ़ की सीमा से उप्फुगढ़ पर हमला बोल दिया।  हमले की खबर सुनकर कफ्फू चौहान अपने सैनिकों के साथ राजा अजयपाल की सेना पर टूट पड़े।  लोग ऐसा कहते हैं कि कफ्फू चौहान ने अजयपाल की सेना को उप्पुगढ़ की सीमा से 15 किलोमीटर दूर अठूर जोगियाणा तक खदेड़ दिया।  इस बीच कफ्फू चौहान की मां और पत्नी को युद्ध भूमि से कफ्फू चौहान के वीरगति की झूठी सूचना मिली।  इस गम में दोनों ने जलती चिता में कूद लगाकर जीवन लीला समाप्त कर दी।
