- Houseboat of Kerala मलयालम भाषा में केट्टु का अर्थ ‘तैरता ढांचा’ और ‘वल्लम’ का अर्थ बोट होता है। इस बोट में लकड़ी के छालों की बनी छत होती है। यह बोट पनस की लकड़ी के गट्ठों से बनी होती है। इन लकड़ी के गट्ठों को नारियल के रेशों या कॉयर से जोड़ा जाता है। इसके बाद इस पर काजू के उबले गूदे से बने कठोर काले राल का लेप लगाया जाता है। कोई नाविक एक बार इसे बना लें और ध्यान से मेंटनेंस करें तो यह सालों-साल ही नहीं कई पीढ़ियों तक चलता है।

- केरल के हाउसबोट या केट्टुवल्लम का एक हिस्सा बांस और कॉयर (Coir) से ढंका होता है। इसमें टूरिस्ट के आराम करने के लिए कमरे बने होते हैं। कमरे से जुड़े हुए बाथरूम भी बने होते हैं। इन बाथरूम में किसी लक्जरी होटल की तरह सारी सुविधाएं होती हैं। इन्हीं कमरों के पीछे एक किचन भी होता है। हाउसबोट की सैर करने वाले गेस्ट का भोजन इसी में बनाया जाता है। हाउसबोट में यात्रा करने की एक खास बात यह है कि आप बोट में आराम करते हुए अछूते और दुर्गम पहुंच वाले ग्रामीण केरल के बेहतरीन नजारे देख सकते हैं।

- Houseboat of Kerala यूं तो केट्टुवल्लम को सामानों की ढुलाई के लिए बनाया गया था। लेकिन जब विज्ञान ने तरक्की तो सामानों को ढोने के नए-नए साधन आ गए। अब तो छोटे-बड़े ट्रक हर गांव और हर गली तक जाने लगे हैं। ये ट्रक केट्टुवल्लम के मुकाबले सस्ते होते हैं। इन्हें चलाना भी सस्ता पड़ता है। इनका मेंटनेंस भी आसान है। इसलिए केट्टुवल्लम की चमक फीकी पड़ने लगी। ऐसे में केरल के नाविकों ने 100 साल से अधिक इन पुराने बोटों को बाज़ार में बनाए रखने का नया तरीका ढूंढ लिया। और माल ढोने का केट्टुवल्लम बन गया नए जमाने का हाउसबोट।
